The IEC 60034-30-1 standard sorts induction motors into efficiency classes: IE1 (standard), IE2 (high), IE3 (premium) and IE4 (super premium). A higher class means less energy is lost as heat, which lowers running costs over the motor's life.

For a motor that runs many hours a day, the electricity bill dwarfs the purchase price. Upgrading from IE2 to IE3 typically cuts losses by 15–20% and pays back the price difference within one to two years of continuous operation.

Many regions now make IE3 the legal minimum for general-purpose motors. Choose IE2 for light, intermittent duty, IE3 for continuous industrial drives, and IE4 where energy is expensive or operating hours are very high.
