Understanding IP Protection Ratings for Motors in Wet Environments
Decode the IP code so you can specify the right ingress protection for dust, water and washdown.
The IP (Ingress Protection) code describes how well a motor resists solids and liquids. It has two digits: the first (0–6) rates protection against dust, the second (0–9) against water.
For example, IP54 keeps out most dust and splashing water, while IP55 adds protection against low-pressure water jets — the practical minimum for pressure washers, food-processing lines and outdoor ventilation. IP56 and above withstand powerful jets and washdown.
Specifying too low an IP rating invites moisture into the windings and shortens life; specifying too high adds unnecessary cost. Match the rating to the real conditions, and pair it with the correct enclosure and insulation class for a motor that lasts.
